Getting Started
Before I start with Lady-Comp / Baby-Comp,
is it necessary for me (or my doctor) to programme the device
or to feed in any personal data?
No, when you receive the Baby-Comp / Lady-Comp, the year, date
and time are already set. You will simply need to set the time
that you wish to be awoken.
The next morning you will be woken up by Lady-Comp / Baby-Comp
and all you will need to do is press the centre button once and
place the thermometer under your tongue for approx. 30 secs. until
you hear an acoustic signal indicating the end of the reading,
and if necessary press a button to indicate whether you are menstruating
at the present time. That is all. Less than a minute and you are
finished.
Everything that Baby-Comp / Lady-Comp needs to know about contraception
is already programmed into the device.
By evaluating the analysis of the temperature readings which
you make every morning it finds out what it needs to know about
your individual cycle.
This means that Baby-Comp / Lady-Comp is completing its knowledge
of your cycle all the time that it is in operation. This happens
quite automatically, without your needing to do a thing.
Additional functions (such as calling up "old" readings
in the memory) are simplicity itself. You just need to press a
button.
What happens when I start using Baby-Comp / Lady-Comp? Does Baby-Comp
/ Lady-Comp need a sort of "running-in time", during
which I should continue to take the pill?
No, absolutely not. When you take the pill, you do not have a
normal cycle since everything is "turned off" by the
medication. The bleeding that you have every 28 days when taking
the pill is caused by the withdrawal of the medication. It is
triggered off by your discontinuing to take the synthetic pill
hormones for seven days. This seven-day interval was introduced
for psychological reasons to create the impression that you are
having a normal cycle. The bleeding caused by the withdrawal of
the medication is in no way related to normal menstruation In
the same way, no ovulation, and therefore no rise in temperature,
takes place when you take the pill.
If you continue to take the pill, Baby-Comp / Lady-Comp is not
able to take readings of the natural temperature fluctuations
in your cycle. It is therefore superfluous for you to continue
to take the pill when you begin using Baby-Comp / Lady-Comp as
the device does not require a "running-in time".
At the beginning, Baby-Comp / Lady-Comp works using data history
which has been programmed into the device and is applicable for
all men and women (therefore also for you) and which therefore
enables the device to make reliable forecasts. This data history
is increasingly individualised during use. The individualised
data makes it possible to narrow down the fertile days from one
cycle to another with more and more accuracy.
The "infertile" display is however just as reliable
on the first day of use as it is after two to three months. The
difference is that at the beginning it appears less frequently.
Can I use Baby-Comp / Lady-Comp immediately
after stopping the pill?
Basically, yes. You must however reckon with your cycle taking
some months, and sometimes even years, (particularly if you have
been taking the pill for many years and started very young) to recover
from being "switched off" by hormones that were foreign
to your body and to re-establish its natural rhythm. During this
time it may well be that you will not ovulate at all, and menstruation
may also be irregular or absent Baby-Comp / Lady-Comp will determine
your personal rhythm as it actually is at this time and will continue
to display "yellow" for days when you are possibly fertile
or the learning area. In most cases this only lasts for one to three
months.
The first bleeding after stopping the pill is not a real menstruation,
but actually a so-called withdrawal bleeding (as during the seven-day
interval when taking the pill) caused by the withdrawal from the
hormones in the pill. In the case of most women, 2 - 4 more weeks
are required for the biological clock in the brain to resume its
activity, meaning that after four more weeks (a total of 6 - 8
weeks after stopping the pill) the first "real" menstruation
will begin.
You can begin using Baby-Comp / Lady-Comp at any time. During
the time between stopping the pill and the first "real"
menstruation, the risk of an unwanted pregnancy is relatively
low, as this first cycle is mostly - but not always - anovulatory
(i.e., without ovulation). For safety reasons you should use a
barrier method for contraception during this time.
